Before Joining Helplife
In our household, there are three members: my mother, my brother, and I. My father left us when I was just six years old, and my mother raised us with great difficulty. She worked as a domestic helper to provide for my brother and me, ensuring we received an education. I contracted polio when I was six months old, which left me disabled in both legs, forcing me to rely on a wheelchair for mobility. Due to my disability, attending school was challenging, and I had to leave school and move to a hostel. In 2003, I studied there until the seventh grade, after which I had to discontinue my education.
In 2007, I moved to Sindhudurg and began working in a cashew factory. I got married in 2010; my husband is also disabled, with a 50% disability, while I have a 70% disability. We have a 14-year-old son who is currently in the seventh grade. In 2018, my mother was diagnosed with cancer and unfortunately passed away. We live in a rented house and have been away from Sindhudurg for nine months now, residing with my brother, husband, son, and myself. Our household relies on the income of two earners: my brother earns ₹12,000, and my husband earns ₹10,000. Despite our combined efforts, we face significant financial difficulties, struggling to pay for school fees and rent. My mobility challenges also hinder my ability to work outside the home.
After Joining Helplife
Recently, I received a sewing machine from Helplife. Prior to this, I did not know how to operate a sewing machine, but with the support provided, I learned to use it. Now, I can alter my own dresses and have gained a sense of independence. The ability to sew has brought me immense happiness and a new sense of purpose.
“I am extremely grateful to Helplife for their assistance. The sewing machine has not only empowered me but has also allowed me to contribute to my family’s income. I feel hopeful and motivated to move forward in life. Thank you, Helplife; I am determined to continue growing and improving my situation”.
