Persons with disabilities (PwDs)
There are over 40 million people living with disabilities. Due to the inaccuracies of data we don’t know the type of disability in different categories, but what we do know irrespective of the numbers is that it is the abled people who are contributing towards segregating the people with disabilities.
Helplife, after 16 years of research in the area of disability, has seen that people with no disabilities are not able to understand the needs of PwDs, who are living a life of isolation and poverty, mostly in remote parts of rural India. They do not have access to essential services that are needed to live a respectful life. They are the victims of our deceptive perceptions and stigma, with cultural and accessibility barriers that we so-called abled people have created for them.
Time to reflect on whether “we are really abled that we are contributing immensely in prophesizing other disabilities. Through ignoring them, not giving them a seat on the table, no voice, no empathy, no jobs and no tolerance and patience to teach or build their capacity.”
We need to stop and reflect and find time to be with them, and we will then see that they have resilience, appetite to learn, and in many instances they will surpass our expectations.
Come to Helplife and read some of the transformational stories of our paraplegics and quadriplegics, which will serve as an eye opener.
Join hands with Helplife to transform lives of the most vulnerable and help everyone to be a productive member of the society.
